What is Hertz?
Hertz (Hz) is a unit of frequency measurement in the field of technology. Specifically, it is a measure of cycles per second and is in the International System of Units (SI). It’s a consistent and precise way of measuring frequency that is really important in technology where measurements need to be very exact. Hertz is used across different scientific fields like physics, acoustics, radio and television broadcasting, computer technology, and telecommunications. Hertz is also used in many areas, like studying light waves, sound waves, electrical signals, or measuring time with a clock. It helps us count and compare these different things in the same way.
How is Hertz used?
Specifically, in computing and information technology, Hertz is predominantly used to measure the operating speed of a computer’s central processing unit (CPU), typically recorded in gigahertz (GHz). The frequency measured in Hertz, provides an indication of the CPU’s performance capability. Hertz is also used to measure the refresh rate of monitors, televisions, and other display devices. The refresh rate represents the number of times per second that the screen updates with new information. A higher refresh rate usually results in smoother, less blurry motion on the screen, which is particularly important for activities like gaming or video editing. In telecommunications, Hertz is used to measure the frequency of electromagnetic waves used in radio and television broadcasting, mobile phone networks, and Wi-Fi signals. For example, radio stations transmit at different frequencies expressed in kilohertz (kHz), megahertz (MHz), or gigahertz (GHz). These frequencies are the ‘channels’ through which information is sent and received wirelessly over distances.
In data storage technology, Hertz measures the rotational speed of hard disk drives(HDD), which tells us how many times the disk spins around in one second. The faster the disk spins, the quicker it can access different parts of the disk. This means data can be written (saved) to or read (retrieved) from the disk more quickly. If the disk spins faster, the hard drive can save or find your files more quickly. This means the performance of your computer can be better because it doesn’t have to wait as long to save or open files. The frequency bands data transmission takes place on are also measured in Hertz. These include Wi-Fi and mobile data standards like 4G and 5G which operate at specific frequencies in the radio spectrum.
