PoE Lighting Solutions
Many commercial property and business owners are aware of how popular smart building – also referred to as digital building technology – has become over the past several years. Smart building technology converges all of a building’s systems, including building automation, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). Smart buildings also provide PoE lighting solutions.
A Power over Ethernet (PoE) lighting system is just what it sounds like – a lighting system that gets its power via an Ethernet cable. These systems provide property owners with better light quality, longer bulb life, and much lower energy bills. PoE lighting systems also gather data, use motion sensors to detect the presence of people, and detect when lighting is no longer needed in an area. These systems can also be accessed remotely by authorized users via smartphones or other smart devices.
What Is PoE Technology?
PoE technology first came about during the early 1990s and was used for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems. Instead of plugging your home phone into the phone outlet, VoIP users plugged their phones into the Internet, which also allowed them to save money on long-distance phone calls.
Years later, that same technology is being applied for more efficient lighting. As a representative from our PoE lighting company can explain, PoE lighting solutions use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), which are currently the most energy-efficient lights available. LED lighting uses 75 percent less energy and lasts 25 times longer than other types of lighting. LED lights are also better for human circadian rhythms and minimizing eye strain.
When a building has a PoE lighting system, the lights are connected to the building’s IT system and uses small processors and sensors to help control the lighting configurations.
What Are Some of the Benefits of PoE Lighting Systems?
There are a number of benefits to installing a PoE lighting system. One of the best benefits of PoE lighting systems is the savings in electric consumption and costs. Not only are you using less electricity, but you are also saving money on not having to replace bulbs as frequently. To get an idea of just how much you can save, consider that the yearly cost for electricity for an incandescent bulb is just under $14.00. That is also how long the bulb will likely last you, just one year. The yearly cost of electricity for a PoE LED bulb is $2.99 and the life span is between 15 to 25 years.
Another great cost-effective benefit to PoE lighting systems is that it gives owners complete control over automating, including the ability to schedule in advance what areas should have the lights on or off. For example, lights can be scheduled to automatically shut down during the hours when the business is closed.
There is also the ability to utilize occupancy sensors which will turn the lights on or off based on whether or not there is anyone in the room. When a person walks into a room, the activity triggers a sensor that automatically turns the light on. These sensors also are triggered when no one is in the room and automatically turn the lights off.
